No Bad Guys Allowed!

It definitely is true what they say that you begin to experience things like a child again through your own children. I cannot tell you how excited Scott and I are about Christmas this year. So much so, that as we almost have our shopping done, we have already snuck a peak at Santa at the mall, we were very tempted to go ahead and put up the tree even though we hadn’t had Thanksgiving yet (we resisted) and we of course started watching the holiday favorites and showing them to Jack. Jack completely gets Santa this year and is giddy whenever he sees the trees up in the store (which of course started popping up in August).

Anyway, in our glee Scott introduced Jack to Frosty the Snowman – a family favorite for sure. Who doesn’t love Frosty? Well, Jack of course loves him too, but the first time he watched him he ran upstairs to tell me all about it and the first thing out of his mouth was “and there was a bad guy” – and he had a very concerned look on his face. He continued to talk about the bad guy with genuine understanding and that is the moment my heart broke just a little.

I realized that this was his very first experience with bad guys and that made me very sad – can’t he live in his blissful world of innocence just a little longer, I wondered. It helps that we could explain while we watched Frosty again that Santa fixed it and the bad guy turned into a good guy because he learned his lesson, but I realize eventually he will truly know that there are some bad guys in the world that never learn. I hope we can continue to keep him concerned about the bad guys and rooting for the good guys at least a while longer.
